Cultural library integration for immigrants / DEMOCRATIC LIBRARY
Tomorrow 3.11. we have an interesting group visiting the library. The group members don't really know any Finnish, neither speak nor read. Ville and I are going to run this library session. We also go to receive them from the market. They don't know us, so we have a sun sign as a symbol. We escort them from the square to the library. You will hear later how it went. We have had these illiterate and groups on many occasions before and we have visited museums with them to marvel at the statues. However, this is the first one this fall. We have only taken on two groups this fall, since the Ukrainian work takes so much time. A total of 12 people in the group. Languages Arabic, Sorani, Dari, Thai, Albanian, Somali, Farsi and Phasto. "The Albanian lady talked about tumors in the interview and she has at least one or two hip prostheses and apparently something wrong with her knees as well. Walks max 500m and even that very calmly and can hardly climb stairs at all. There are also a few pregnant women in the group, who will apparently be out by the beginning of December at the latest." These people study Finnish elsewhere, but now come to the library and get to know creative literacy teaching. In the program we have: Introduction to the library - Susanna from the video + practicing library words Filling out the library card application + personal data words Drawing symbols of Finland and Turku (swan and symbol of Turku) Finnish nature - drawing and words Flowers are still being made by hand from paper and fabric to help living in the middle of the darkness to the library and for the joy of the staff. |
